Share the Wealth

If you find yourself the owner of considerable technical knowledge and you are the one resource with that knowledge, one sure way to guarantee that you are never promoted is to keep all that information to yourself. You might feel it makes you valuable to retain control of that knowledge, and maybe you are valuable, but your value lies in doing that particular job. You are married to that position. That knowledge is like a ball and chain.

By learning how to share information you are viewed as both a knowledgeable person and someone that can help the organization grow. By sharing knowledge you can position yourself to be available for new challenges because you are not irreplaceable in your current role. As a side benefit you can help others to grow and expand their knowledge. It’s good to be viewed as an expert, but even better to be viewed as an expert that learns, then helps others to learn, and is always ready for new challenges.
